Salem Truck Bypass , Washington County

project locationpre-construction

Project Length: 3.79 miles
Project Construction: 2008-2009
Construction Costs: $32 million

This project involves constructing a new road bypass for SR 60 and SR 135 around the City of Salem.  It will provide a truck bypass from SR 135 to SR 56 on the south and east sides of the city to eliminate congestion on the scenic city square.  The bypass will be constructed as a limited access two-lane roadway with one at-grade intersection at the crossing of SR 60 and three grade separation crossings at Martinsburg Road, SR 160, and Old SR 160 (Market Street).  Two other bridge structures are proposed with prestressed concrete bulb-tee beams.  One over the CSX Railway and the other over West Fork Blue River.  MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) abutments will be utilized on four of the five bridges and will be part of a Joint Transportation Research Program to test settlement and stresses of the abutments with footings with no piling. Through value engineering CrossRoad Engineers has identified savings of nearly $6,500,000.
